21,000km, an arts degree & 1 giant leap of faith…

Feather & Flame was born in a Surry Hills kitchen in 2020. However, my inspiration had been flickering long before. With an arts degree under my belt, I left England in 2014. I intended to travel the world - with no agenda but to let my heart take the lead. Sydney, Australia was my first stop - and here I still am, over 7 years later!

Twelve months after arriving, I embarked on a journey across this beautiful land. Making my home in the back of a Mitsubishi Pajero, I travelled over 21,000km. From Sydney, I went to Tassie and re-discovered my childhood asthma climbing Cradle Mountains. (My legs are way too small to climb those boulders!)

On to Adelaide, via The Great Ocean Road, waterfalls became showers and koalas kept me company.

I then travelled across the legendary Nullarbor, arriving in Esperance. I couldn’t believe I was the only soul on beaches that stretched for miles, with pristine waters and untouched sand as far as the eye could see… plus some friendly kangaroos!

2000km of dirt road later, travelling at 20kph, and Uluru. It was here that I discovered camels. Wild. In Australia. (I’m from a small town in England don’t forget. We get excited about the occasional badger…) Not to mention the most breathtaking sight at the red-centre of this country.

On to Port Douglas and back to the beach I went. With coconuts and cocktails on the menu (woohoo!) I ventured into the Daintree and Cape Tribulation. The sights and sounds of the rainforest were everywhere.

I wasn’t done there, as I discovered the dare-devil inside! White-water rafting on the Tully River, followed by a quick sky-dive over Mission Beach. (A cyclone had passed through just days before… eek!) I was terrified, but in all these adventures, I discovered I had courage inside me that I didn’t know existed.

Of course, I couldn’t miss out the Great Barrier Reef! My first Scuba dive had me up close and personal, with a natural wonder of the world. Found Nemo, Dory no where to be seen!

The Whitsundays were next, followed by Fraser Island and the stunning Lake Mackenzie - unforgettable.

I worked my way back to Sydney, through Byron Bay and Coffs Harbour. A quick stop in The Blue Mountains to chase a final few waterfalls and home.

The journey ended, but the memories lived on. As travel became harder over the years, I wanted to create something to help others experience what I did; to take people on a journey of discovery, from the comfort of home.

Feather & Flame was born.

I have recaptured these moments in each fragrance, naming my candles after the regions and towns that inspired them.

What’s more, I am committed to protecting this country through complete environmental accountability, so that others can enjoy more travels for years to come.

I hand-pour in reusable glass jars, using vegan soy wax, lead-free cotton wicks, and fragrances that that are non-toxic. All packaging and labelling use recycled materials too.

Combining my love of travel with a commitment to giving back, our ‘From The Ashes’ kits and partnership with One Tree Planted help me and you do more to protect our planet.

I hope that you can be inspired too, whilst knowing that every candle is a step closer to protecting our home for the future.

With love,
Jane x
